What Is a Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA) and Why Might You Need One?
While it can sound technical, the purpose of a FCA is simple: to better understand how a person manages everyday life and what supports may help them live more independently and achieve their goals.
What is a Functional Capacity Assessment?
A Functional Capacity Assessment is a comprehensive assessment completed by an Occupational Therapist to understand a person’s strengths, challenges, and support needs across different areas of daily life. The assessment looks at how someone functions in their everyday environment. This may include areas such as:
Personal care and daily routines
Managing a home environment
Community access and participation
Social interaction and relationships
Organisation, planning, and executive functioning
Emotional regulation and coping strategies
Rather than focusing solely on diagnosis, a FCA focuses on how a person experiences and navigates daily life.
What Happens During a FCA?
A FCA usually involves several parts. Your Occupational Therapist will spend time getting to know you and understanding your goals, supports, and day-to-day routines.
This may include:
Conversations about your daily life and current supports
Observations of how tasks are completed
Standardised assessment tools
Input from family members, support workers, or other professionals (with your consent)
The goal is to build a clear and accurate picture of how you function across different areas of life.
What Does the FCA Report Include?
Following the assessment, your Occupational Therapist will prepare a detailed report. This report outlines:
Your strengths and abilities
Areas where additional support may be helpful
The impact of your disability on daily functioning
Recommendations for supports, therapy, or services
The report may also include recommendations for things like ongoing therapy supports, support worker hours, or assistive technology.
Why Might a FCA Be Requested?
Functional Capacity Assessments are commonly requested to support NDIS planning or plan reviews. The report helps provide clear evidence about a participant’s support needs and how those supports relate to their goals.
FCA’s can help the NDIS understand:
What supports are reasonable and necessary
How current supports are working
What additional supports may improve independence and participation
This information can help guide decisions about funding and future supports
